Department of Medical Education and Drugs (MEDD), Government of Maharashtra is an administrative department responsible for medical education, research and streamlining of medicines in the state of Maharashtra. This department works through the Commissioner, Medical Education and Research and the Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Under the Commissioner, Medical Education and Research, there are two wings - Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and Directorate, AYUSH (Ayurveda Yoga Unani Siddha and Homeopathy). Commissioner FDA enforces the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 to regulate the import, manufacture, distribution and sale of drugs and cosmetics and also enforces the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 to enforce food safety and standards and applies the Cosmetics Act, 1940 and also applies the Un Safety and Standards Act, 2006 to comply with food safety and standards.
The Department of Medical Education and Medicine (MEDD), through government medical, dental, nursing, Ayurveda and homeopathic colleges and hospitals, is expected to provide medical education and general, specialty and super-specialty healthcare facilities to the public at large. It also completes nursing education through government nursing colleges. The Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health (MIMH), established in 1991, is administered by the Department of Medical Education and Medicines. Haffkine Institute for Training, Research and Testing as well as Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited are also under administrative supervision. The department conducts research, testing and training in infectious diseases at the Hafkain Institute. Haffkine Bio-Pharma manufactures and procures drugs and vaccines for the state. The department also approves and controls the establishment of private medical/dental/AYUSH/nursing colleges.
All the above functions of the department are carried out as per the guidelines received from various central concerned commissions and councils.
